How to Take Care Of Your Child Teeth

Updated on June 20, 2011

Healthy teeth and mouth during the toddler and childhood time were very important to determine the next age level. We have to take seriously to take care of our child's teeth. If not, they will have the mouth and teeth disease easily, like caries, gingivitis, and sprue.
Diet, oral hygiene and regular visits to the dentist are all important in helping to care for a child's teeth.

Milk teeth (Deciduous Teeth)

Children teeth start to develop before birth. There are two sets of teeth, milk teeth and permanent teeth.
What is milk teeth ? Deciduous teeth, or known as milk teeth, baby teeth, temporary teeth and primary teeth, are the first set of teeth in the growth development of humans and many other mammals. They develop during the embryonic stage of development and erupt—that is, they become visible in the mouth—during infancy. They are usually lost and replaced by permanent teeth, but in the absence of permanent replacements, they can remain functional for many years.

Children usually have 20 milk teeth. They start to push through the gums (erupt) at about six months. Most children have all 20 teeth by the age of two or three. The last milk tooth will fall out at around the age of 12.

Your child's milk teeth are important for his/her eating, speech, smile and confidence. They are also important for the development of his/her permanent teeth, so it's very important to look after them.

Permanent teeth

According to Britannica Online, Permanent teeth are the second set of teeth. There are thirty-two permanent teeth that include four incisors, two canines, four premolars, and six molars in each jaw.

Permanent teeth usually start to erupt at the age of six. Adults have up to 32 permanent teeth.

Most of these will erupt by the age of 13. However, wisdom teeth (those at the very back of the mouth) often don't erupt until the early- to mid-twenties, if at all. I had my wisdom teeth at the age of eighteen.

If your child's permanent teeth are damaged or need to be removed, there won't be another set of natural teeth to replace them.

How to take care of our child's teeth

We have to take care of our child's teeth from damage. Tooth decay, dental erosion, caries, and many more.

if your child has tooth decay, it will eventually reach the center of the tooth and cause a tootache. It really painful for the child. Dental erosion can cause sensitivity and pain. If your child has a seriously eroded tooth, you have to ask your pediatric dentist to protect the tooth with a filling.

We can take care of our child's tooth by :

1. Teaching them to brush their teeth as early as possible.

We can start to brush our child when he/she had their first tooth. We can use a clean cloth or very soft tooth brush and use a non fluoride toothpaste that save for the child. We can also buy a special toothbrush for babies.
We can make toothbrushing a regular and fun activity. Because sometime it's hard to ask the child to brush the teeth. Brush the child's teeth after meal and before the bedtime.

We can start teaching the child to brush his/her teeth when the child reach six or seven years old using a gentle toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. Brush the teeth with circular motion.

2. Avoid giving the child too many sugary foods and drinks

I know it's hard to keep the candies, and sugary foods from a little child. But we have to try reducing some sugar in our child's diet. This is the best way to prevent tooth decay. We have to avoid giving our kid sugary foods and drinks as snacks between meals and before bedtime. My daughter loves sugary cereals and snacks so, I have to work hard to prevent her teeth from damage :)

If possible, we have to offer some healthier snacks for him/her like fruits, vegetables (I know how hard persuade a child to eat their vegetables), milk, and cheese.

Plain water and plain milk doesn't cause tooth decay or erosion. Your child may find it hard to drink plain water or milk if he/she usually has sweet drinks, but most children get used to it over time.

3.Taking the child to the dentist regularly

We can take our child to the dentist or pediatric dentist as soon as he/she reaches his/her first birthday party. There are some really sweet and caring pediatric dentist in my town that may make our child feel comfortable and not afraid. The dentist has a cute and ergonomic dental chair that make the child feel fun about it. The chair is so funny and has many different shape.

It's a good idea to take your child when you go for your routine dental check-ups, even when he/she is too young to have teeth. This helps your child get familiar with the people and the surroundings at the dental surgery. Your dentist will look in your child's mouth in an informal way, and may count how many teeth have erupted and spot any early signs of decay. Quick check-ups like this help to encourage good cooperation with the dentist when your child is older.

Children usually need dental visits more often than adults. Milk teeth are smaller and have thinner enamel than permanent teeth, so decay can spread very quickly. Regular check-ups help your dentist to help you prevent and treat decay before it causes toothache.

We may ask the dentist some advice about DIY protective treatments.
