Ten Habits That Make You Gain More Weight

Updated on July 24, 2009

Sometime we never realize that our daily habits could make us gain more weight. I did many of those habits and I admit it hard to change it without strong will.

1. Watch TV
Watching TV in a long time could make us gain more weight. If you watch TV more than 2 hours a day , the obesity chance is bigger than those who watch TV just half an hour. When we watch TV, your body is really still. The heart pulse, blood pressure, and metabolism level are drop. Do you know how many calories are burnt per hour ? Only 20 to 30 calories. It's not enough. Not mention the snack time during the show yet.

2. Eating to Fast
Busy people used to have this habit. They could empty their plate only a few minutes (just for 10 minutes or less) to finish their meal. Well it could save the time but not the health. Eating to fast will make us not realize the full feeling. Our brain needs about 15 to 20 minutes to send the full feeling. Eating to fast could disturb our metabolism and stimulate the high blood pressure, raise on cholesterol level, and disturb the insulin works.

3. Having Snacks
Have some snacks anywhere and anytime, in front of the computer, TV, on the public area, on a queue, in the car...and your weight are gradually added ha..ha.

4. Consuming Junk Foods
Junk Food is well known has a high polyunsaturated fat, high trans fat, contain high salt, and low fiber. So if we consume the junk food often, it could add you some calories you never realize.

5. Emotional Eating
Emotional Eating is someone who eats in huge portion of food not because he or she is hungry but it caused more by problem, depression, broken heart, anxiety, worry, and many more. I just watched a scene from a movie about a woman who ate a huge box of ice cream because she just broke up with her boyfriend....sound familiar ?

6. Rarely Works Out and Exercise
We have to exercise regularly to maintain our normal weight and health. Like joging in the morning, walking fast, swimming, ride a bike are simple exercise that we could do regularly.

7. Gain Weight could be contagious
It's not really contagious, I mean if we have an overweight friend, we tend to be overweight too. It depends also by how we are influenced by another people. The New England Journal of Medicine has published a study about this in July 26,2007. About 120,000 people age above 32 years old, are easy to gain more weight when they 've got a sibling who is overweight or near the overweight people. The chance  is about 37% to 57%

8. Lack of Sleep
Lack of sleep may cause the overweight because it stimulates the ghrelin hormone (hormone that stimulates our passion to eat) and reduce the leptin hormone (hormone to reduce our passion to eat). If we reduce our sleep duration for an hour it could raise 3% of our body fat.

9. Never Count the Calorie
Most people never count the calorie when they eat. They think they just eat a little but they gain weight. What cause it ? They consume high calorie meal and not realize it. That explain why some people are remain overweight whereas they just eat a little.

10. Skip the Main Meal
Research shows that people who have a routine breakfast habit will not overweight or the risk is so small. If we tend to skip the main meal, we will feel starving and it make us eat uncontrollable.

Unfortunately, I used to have most of those habits. It really need a strong will to skip the bad habits.
